Our
Story

In keeping with our goal of fostering a thriving local arts community, we have recently transitioned to a 501c3 nonprofit organization. This structure enables us to expand our educational programs, showcase diverse work from both members and nonmembers, and invite broader community participation and support. We look forward to continuing this growth opportunity and invite you to join us.

The Marketplace gift shop, continues to be an artist/member driven collective, managed and run by volunteer energy. A portion of these sales helps to support our non-profit mission.

In 1985, a local group of artists and craftsmen gathered  with the dream of creating an outlet for our work and to provide classes and programs in the arts and culture for the Grand Marais Community. After much research, including field trips to remote places like Boston, and with some help from Northern Michigan University, Grand Marais Cottage Industries/The Marketplace was officially formed.

With no permanent home, our group moved from one location to another. We set up shop in a fish house, a t-shirt shop, an empty house on Main and even the old Post Office. Ultimately, an offer to rent the family-owned old Barber Shop was made by Normajean Bennet.  At last we had found a home and the dream of having a place to exhibit and sell our products was a reality.

We are deeply grateful for the endowment provided to the Alger Regional Community Foundation by the family of the late Jean Melhlenbacher, a cherished member of The Marketplace. This generous gift has ensured the continuation of vital art and cultural programs in her honor.
